MOTTAFOLLONE - CALABRIA- SOUTH ITALY
In the valley of Esaro, on the path that once regulated commercial traffic between the Greek city of Sibari and the Tirrenian side to the mouth of river Lao rises the town of Mottafollone, of ancient origins, an historical witness with cultural paths that still accompany tourists to admire the beauties of this country. Mottafollone is situated on a hilltop in 389 metres above sea level and is furrowed by the rivers Occido that descends from the mountains of Policastrello and the Rosa which starts from the mountains of Mula and ends in the river Esaro. Its' name "Follone" comes from Greek word "phyllon" i.e grass "Soapwort", plenty in the area. In the period of brass, towards the 10th century had added "Motta", from french mocte "heights".
